Gabby Hammond, our very first recipient of the Grace Fehan Memorial Scholarship, spent time this past summer on an unforgettable journey through southern Spain. A 2022 graduate of Powhatan High School and now an Art History major at Sweet Briar College, Gabby joined a study abroad program that aligned beautifully with her academic focus—Islamic Art and Architecture.
Thanks to the support of the scholarship, Gabby was able to take part in this enriching experience. Over the course of the trip, she explored cultural landmarks and historic treasures, including the breathtaking Great Mosque of Córdoba and the lush gardens of the Alcázar in Seville. Walking through these centuries-old sites gave her a deeper appreciation of the history and beauty she studies in the classroom.
Gabby shared that the experience expanded her understanding not just of art and architecture, but also of culture, language, and the power of seeing history in person. It was, in her words, a transformative chapter in her educational journey.
We’re honored to spotlight her story and share a few photos from her time abroad—moments that capture both the joy of exploration and the spirit of learning that the Grace Fehan Memorial Scholarship was created to support.
