The Grace Fehan Memorial Scholarship

Because Grace always came back from trips to other countries with an appreciation of different cultures and ways of life, we want other students to have that same kind of opportunity.  The Grace Fehan Memorial Scholarship is meant for high school and technical school students in Powhatan County, Virginia, who desire to travel internationally for a program or class that will help them achieve their life goals.

We want students to learn in small ways and big ways. This can be a school trip or an immersion program. What is important is the connection and engagement with others. The experience should foster an appreciation for different cultures including the art, the food and the culture. The goal is to create a deeper understanding and connection to the broader world.  Hopefully through this experience students will realize we are all more alike than different.

The scholarship is aimed at short term experiences in a foreign country.  This could be a 1-week school trip to participating in a longer exchange program. The purpose is to financially support a student who may otherwise not consider an international experience due to financial limitations. This may be a person’s first trip or a repeat experience to another country to broader their sense of appreciation. This may be attending a summer school or engaging in some kind of cultural immersion.

Think outside the box for learning opportunities such as living in a “homestay,” attending a class to learn specific skills, or being a part of a volunteer effort while living in a foreign country. We want to award our scholarships to young adults who want to experience new cultures and embrace learning in other countries.  We want to encourage students to engage with local traditions, cuisine, arts, and daily life.

The process to apply is easy! Write an essay or put together a short video telling us what you’d like to learn, where you’d like to go, and why this learning opportunity is important to you. The online application can be found HERE.

Our committee will review all submissions and will award scholarships based on academic achievement, attendance record, leadership potential, demonstrated interest in global issues, and financial need.  We will evaluate the impact on the students’ personal development, academic interests, and career aspirations, as well as the broader influence on promoting global citizenship and cross-cultural understanding.

Throughout the trip, scholarship students will be encouraged to reflect on their experiences, discuss insights gained, and participate in group discussions or journaling exercises to process their learning and personal growth. After returning home, scholarship students will be expected to share their experiences with their school or local community through presentations, written reflections, or creative projects.
